Stress Factor

Stress is a concept that needs no introduction. In fact, it’s something that most people know all too well. In this fast-paced world that we live in, stress is the one constant that you can rely on. It’s always there and never lets you down. Good old, stress! Even when you think you’ve finally beaten all those stress-inducing obstacles in your life – and you can just take a moment to breathe – up pops another little item or scenario to keep you on edge.

Of course, stress is no laughing matter. After all, as we’ve been told ad nauseam, stress is BAD! It’s bad for your health, bad for your mind and bad for your soul. Yes, I think that’s pretty obvious and it doesn’t take a PhD to figure that one out. However, what’s not being said is that all this talk about the adverse effects of stress just makes you more stressed, because now you have to figure out how to stop stressing. This quote basically sums it up:

“I stress about stress before there’s even stress to stress about. Then I stress about stressing over stress that doesn’t need to be stressed about. It’s stressful.”

Now, who said stress was a simple matter to solve?

Nevertheless, I do believe that laughter is probably one of the best cures for stress. This is fortunate, because stress can definitely cause you to do some pretty silly things, which are undeniably good for a laugh. Ah, yes! I’m talking about those really stupid things you do when your brain is so distracted by a million other things that you switch onto autopilot when performing your daily, routine tasks – which is rather hazardous.

For whatever reason, we humans do not function too well on autopilot. You’d think that it wouldn’t require much brain power to do something that you’ve done a thousand times. But, apparently minimal brain power equals maximum idiocy. Go figure!

Here are my top six stress sillies over the last few months:

1.

Putting your washing in the toilet instead of the washing basket.

This is my all-time favourite blunder. Fortunately, I’ve never actually thrown my clothes into the toilet, although I’ve come quite close on several occasions. No doubt, however, there are those who have felt the full repercussions of going through the motions of lifting a lid and tossing without paying attention to the receptacle.

2.

Trying to screw the bottle cap onto your glass instead of the bottle.

There’s a bright idea. I wonder why it doesn’t fit!

3.

Shaking the milk bottle after you’ve already taken the lid off.

This just gives a whole new (very messy) meaning to the concept of ‘milkshake’.

4.

Using nail polish remover on your eyes instead of eye make-up remover.

This was quite a close call for me, but I was saved by the potent smell that kick-started my brain again. Thank goodness! I don’t even want to consider the alternative. Ouch!

5.

Jumping into the shower with an item of clothing still on.

Hey, it happens!

6.

Switching off the alarm clock and shushing it.

Yes, I actually told my alarm clock to ‘shush’ one morning. That will teach him! Okay, so that was probably one of my biggest blonde moments ever, although in all fairness I was still half asleep.

There’s no denying that stress messes with your head and makes you do crazy things. However, it’s probably best not to stress about it. Remember, it’s just another day in a world full of crazy, stressed out people and you are not alone. So, laugh, live, watch out for that toilet and stay away from the nail polish remover.
